The Post-Internet Era Has Made All Aspects Of Your Company, Culture, And Products, Entirely Transparent To Your Demographic<\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nThere are at\r\nleast two reasons to fix your workplace culture: 1) your company culture will\r\ninform your brand experience and even product innovation and design, and 2) you\r\ncan’t fake being happy, and I suppose c) is that you can’t hide <\/em>a dysfunctional culture, either.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nIt used to\r\nbe that your organization could pretend to be something it is not. That’s not\r\npossible now, and – just as I advise fixing your product – it’s better to fix\r\nyour company and culture than try to fool people, or deny the direct impact\r\nyour corporate culture has on your brand perception or product design,\r\ninnovation, and development.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nAnybody in\r\nthe San Francisco Bay knows that Kaiser Permanente is an over-grown, toxic,\r\nbureaucratic, hell-hole, that offers security for (largely) risk-averse people,\r\nand ‘status’ for uninspired upper management; it’s basically like government,\r\nexcept worse, since you don’t get the comfort of ‘service’. Is that mean<\/em>? I don’t care – it’s true.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nKaiser\r\nsurvives by virtue of being inextricably linked to the healthcare-industrial\r\ncomplex, through its own momentum, ill-gotten wealth, legacy contracts, and\r\nexistence as an institution. So, the ‘thrive’ message in their commercials,\r\nwith the West Wing lady, the wellness\r\nmodel<\/em> tagline, is baloney. And that mismatch is ridiculous. They don’t care<\/em>, not really. And if you work for\r\nKaiser or know people who do, I don’t relish this reality.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n
\"\"<\/div>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nHow do I know this to be the case? From research, from word-of-mouth, and from their employees<\/em>. If I had cause to go there as a patient, all that information is right there, on the Internet. You can’t hide anything – not anymore.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nWe know HP\r\nand IBM are dying companies, despite their ads about ‘Watson’ curing cancer or\r\nwhatever. They’re, also, populated by unhappy people, who don’t innovate. And\r\nthey lumber on because they buy up intellectual property (from innovators), and\r\nusurious contracts with wastrel, enterprise clients (which also have miserable\r\nemployees). How do I know? Their employees, and also, the Internet. See the\r\npattern?\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nYour product\r\nis your culture, in part, because – today – you are visible from all sides<\/em>, in the Internet Era, and\r\nbecause there are internal channels of communication that weren’t there 25\r\nyears ago. Every employee you have talks to people and on social media, and can\r\nrun communications to anybody else within the company. In a sense, every\r\nemployee is, therefore, part of your sales\/marketing team, customer success,\r\nand potentially, product <\/em>development\r\n– since they can convey feedback on products to engineers and designers,\r\ninternally.\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\nThis means\r\nlow morale, frustrated talent, petty politics, bureaucracy, micro-managed and\r\nunhappy employees, do-nothing consultants – will all eventually wend their way\r\ninto public awareness of your brand. I promise.
